Mercy was a young pit-bull mix puppy who was found on April 14, 2006 wooded area behind the Rock Creek Apartments at Preston and Belt Line, which is in far North Dallas. A local resident found her and could tell that she had been horribly abused. She was taken to Operation Kindness, where it was learned that she had been doused with gasoline, and set on fire. They also found that she had been stabbed more than once.
In the days after she was found she managed to make some progress towards a recovery. However, on April 24, 2006, Mercy died from her injuries.
On April 27, 2006, Deshann Quatrail Brown, was arrested in Corinth, Texas, and charged with animal cruelty. His bond was originally set at $50,000, but was later reduced to $2500. As of early May, 2005, Dallas County District Attorney continues to work on the case.
August 3, 2006 - Mr. Brown is indicted by the Dallas County Grand Jury on a 3rd-degree felony.
The 3rd-degree felony indictment is for Cruelty to Animals With the Finding of a Deadly Weapon, which carries a maximum 10-year prison sentence. Brown was originally charged with a State Jail Felony, which carries a maximum of 2 years in prison. (Information from Pet-Abuse.com)
Also, according to Pet-Abuse.com, Mr. Brown was sentenced to 4 years in prison in September, 2007.
